UAH Wins Final CHA Championship in Overtime

UAH Chargers posing after winning the CHA championship.
The soon to be homeless UAH Charger hockey team beat the Niagara Purple Eagles 3-2 on an overtime power play goal to secure both the final College Hockey America conference championship and an autobid into the NCAA hockey tournament. After trading goals throughout the game, including a waived goal for both teams, UAH capitalized quickly on an early power play to put the Purps out for good and further their case for inclusion in a conference for the 2011-2012 season.
Keenan Desmet scores the winning goal.
This is UAH’s second CHA championship (and only their first without yours truly doing the hard work), and one well deserved, if not typical, beating the 2nd seed Robert Morris while hated foe Bemidji State, who UAH has only not lost to once in the last few years, fell to Niagara. Bemidji would go on to lose to Robert Morris today in the third place game, putting them in last place of the CHA in it’s final year, but their 6th place national ranking should be good enough to secure an at-large bid.
And Bemidji still sucks…
UAH will be playing without a conference to call it’s own next year, playing the season as an independent, but winning the CHA championship this year, getting to the NCAAs, and creating a functioning schedule next year, all go a long way to proving UAH’s place in one of the existing college hockey conferences.

Yay! I miss watching them play. When I watched it on tv that first time a couple years ago, it was like holy crap. I'm glad they won.
For the record, I miss watching you play at the games too. That was awesome. And then I'd get to sit across the aisle from you and talk to you. ^_^
